BEVI Successfully Delivers 3,850 kW Shaft Generator Retrofit

BEVI has successfully completed a major shaft generator retrofit project for MSC SUSANNA, a 9,200 TEU container vessel operated by MSC. The project delivers a fully integrated 3,850 kW power generation solution that significantly enhances operational efficiency and sustainability.

Following successful sea trials on May 31, 2026, MSC SUSANNA has completed the first commercial voyage from Qingdao, China, to Busan, South Korea. Operational feedback from the vessel’s captain confirmed stable and reliable system performance, with no faults or alarms.

  • Driving Higher Efficiency and Lower Emissions

The retrofit included a complete shaft generator package comprising:

• A 4,200 kW permanent magnet shaft generator
• Converter cabinet and transformer system
• 3,850 kW grid-connected power output

The project also incorporated several critical vessel upgrades, including:

• Intermediate shaft replacement
• AMS (Alarm Monitoring System) and PMS (Power Management System) upgrades
• Main engine remote-control system modernization

In effect, the project represented a comprehensive ‘heart transplant’ for the vessel’s power infrastructure.

  • Meeting Complex Integration Challenges Under Tight Schedules

While shaft generator retrofits on container vessels are a familiar area of expertise for BEVI, MSC SUSANNA presented a unique challenge. MSC SUSANNA, a vessel with two decades of operational service, entered drydock for a comprehensive modernization program that included: main engine refurbishment, propeller replacement, shore power installation, switchboard maintenance, scrubber inspection and thruster restoration.

The project was executed under an extremely tight schedule with heavy parallel operations, aging onboard equipment, limited installation space, while discrepancies between original drawings and the actual vessel configuration significantly increased project complexity.

From the beginning of the drydock period, BEVI deployed a dedicated service team on site, providing continuous technical support for three consecutive months. Leveraging deep marine electrical expertise and strong project execution capabilities, the team ensured the successful coordination of all project phases.

  • Creating Value Beyond the Contract Scope

BEVI’s contribution extended well beyond system delivery and commissioning. The project team played an active role in overall project planning and coordination, multi-system integration, technical support, auxiliary equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.

Notably, a bow thruster that had been out of operation for two years was successfully restored to service, further improving vessel handling performance and operational reliability. As the shipowner noted: “What you delivered goes far beyond what was specified in the contract.”

Following completion of the project, a senior MSC operations executive also expressed appreciation for BEVI’s exceptional commitment, recognizing BEVI’s “Super Effort.”

  • Empowering the Future of Sustainable Shipping

The MSC SUSANNA project once again demonstrates BEVI’s commitment to delivering reliable products, competitive solutions, on-time delivery and outstanding technical service.

As the maritime industry continues to pursue higher standards of energy efficiency and sustainability, BEVI’s shaft generator solutions are helping more shipowners improve vessel energy efficiency, reduce emissions and create long-term value through enhanced CII performance. Empowering every vessel to operate not only more reliably—but also more sustainably.
